After
Norman conquest English literature didn't produce anything until 1200, because
the nobility favoured the French romance, a long narrative poem telling the
deeds of a noble knight and included intricate love story. In 1130 was written
the Historia Regum Britannie , the
book who became the source of the Arthurian cycle, a series of stories
describing the deeds of king Arthur and his knights. From 1350, French and
English languages amalgamated. There were many English dialects, but the most important was the one spoken in London,
Oxford and Cambridge.

Chaucer is the author of The Canterbury
Tales, a poem were 29 pilgrims tells stories. The pilgrims represents
different social status, and because of that Chaucer is considered the first
humanist in English literature.
Drama began
to merge in the Middle Ages to give illiterate peasants a religious education.
It was born with the festival of Corpus Christi and
originally was called "Mystery". These plays referred to episodes of the bible
and were financed by the town guilds, but later were played only in the courts.
These plays took place from morning to evening. Medieval dramas were very
important because added a human element to the religious theme.
