Analysis from the 6th quatrain
In this stanza the mother interruptus her succession of questions. The mothe know what her son have made into the greenwood, lord Randal was poisoned by a supernatural creature, probably a witch. During this quatrain there is a change in the last line from “For I’m wearied…doon” to “For I’m sick…doon”. This structure is present until the last stanza.
In the following stanzas the mother asks Lord Randal what he will leave to his family. This concept underlines the values of the middle ages. In fact the inheritage was very important because Lord Randal was the leader of the family and all the decisions and earning came from him. When he died she must leave something to the family to survive. In this case the brother will take the control.
In the last stanza she asks him what he is going to leave to his true love and he answers that he will leave “hell and fire”. He wants that the creature that cause him pain goes to hell.
