The protagonist looks inside him to feel the emotions but there is the silence, he seems a ghost “living or dead”.
In the next scene there is Madame Sosostris, a famous clairvoyante. She tries to predict the true events through a pack of cards. Each card have a symbolic meaning, Belladonna is a poison and “The Lady of the Rocks” refers to Monna Lisa because it is an enigmatic figure. The horoscope is another art that tries to predict the future. The predicitions of Madame Sosostris are about death and this seems to return to the desert, the waste land. These symbols are a way to explain the aims of the poet.
The last scene starts with the image of unreal city, London, a foggy city, in which people seems damned. This is a quotation from Dante’s Inferno to indicate the condition of the modern man that is paralysed in his daily life. The image of damned men returns an image of death and desolation.
The figure of Stetson reminds memories in the protagonist. The quotation of “Mylae” is about the battle in the Punic War that underlines the concept of the time for the poet, in this case the simultaneity. In the last line there is expressed the condition of mortality of all human beings. For this reason the poet considers the reader as a brother, because they share the same destiny.
