Pag. 152 ex. n.1 from the Context
a) Underline the political aims of the marriage between Lady Diana and the prince of Wales.
"The prince of Wales had chosen a bride ideally suited to bring glamour and a capacity to show human sympathy to a royal family that needed to renew its links with its people" (l. 3 - 5).
b) Say what aspects of the Princess' life turned her into the "people's princess".
She was helpful to others, she sustained several charitable activities and she led a glamorous life; this behaviour was what people were expecting from the royal family.
c) Quote the parts that reveal the royal family's attitudes to Lady Diana.
"For them she was an intruder who had brought the Prince little happiness and had disturbed the royal pattern of existence in many unwelcome ways" (l. 26 - 28).
d) Why did the royal family change their minds about taking part in the funeral?
Because they were told by the Prime Minister Tony Blair that the absence of the royal family at Lady Diana's funeral would be considered as an insult by public opinion.
Ex. n. 2
In the light of what you have read explain the meaning of the phrase in line 1 "turned into something tense and even dangerous".
The writer wants to stress that Lady Diana's death was an event which struck people's conscience and the royal family behaviour would influence the British public's favour. Indeed, if the royal family had not attended Lady Diana's funeral services, it would probably be criticized and distrusted by many people in England.
