Lady Diana and the Royal family

The death of Lady Diana in 1997, besides its highly emotional impact on the people, also brought the role of the monarchy into the political arena.

1) Read the text and complete the tasks

a) Political aims of the marriage between Lady Diana and the Prince of Wales:

Lady Diana brought glamour and human sympathy to the Royal Family who needed to renew the contacts with English people.

b) Aspects of the Princess' life turned her into the "people's princess":

Lady Diana was able to get in touch with ordinary people and supported numerous charitable activities. For example she met AIDS patients, supported the campaign against land mines. As a consequence she gained the title of people's princess.

c)Royal family’s attitude to Lady Diana

They weren’t so agree about her behaviour. As a result they never appreciated and supported her. However they wanted to drive her out of the royal family.

d) Why did the Royal family take part to the funeral?

The Royal family took part to the funeral because Lady Diana was so popular, that if they hadn’t been at the funeral, the image of the royal family would certainly have became unpopular.

2) Explain the meaning of the phrase “turned into something tense and even dangerous”.

When the Princess died seemed as if a part of the royal family was died. As a matter of fact Lady Diana was the only member of the royal family being into contact with people. This, in my opinion is an important attitude because should give a lot of consents to Royal Family.
