2 images associated with sterelity
Stony places, here is no water but only rock, dead mountains mouth of carious teeth that canot spit, dry sterile thunder without rain

Interpretation

1 what is the Thunder's advice? When the Thunder spoke, its word "da" was interpreted in three different way: to give alms, to have compassin, to practice self-control.

2What do you think "these fragments" are? In my opinion the fragments are the many parts in which human being's identity is devided.

3 The journy has come to an end. What final message is conveyed in the concluding lines? Why do you think the last words are in Sanskrit?
The last lines express an hope in a regeneration that now isn't possible but that may be achieved in the future. The last words are in Sanskrit bacause T.S.Eliot wants to create a relationship between what he has written, that derives from the indu text Upanishad, and the language of origin. His aim is, indeed, to create a intertextual poem.

5 what is your reaction to Eliot's experimental poetry and the mass of notes you need (or don't need) in order to understand it?
I'm surprised by his attempt to create a poem including works belonging to very different cultures because this demonstrates a wide knowledge and comprehension. Only knowing the various work of art it is possible to understand the poem, and for this reason many notes are present.

6Eliot wrote that modern poetry must be difficult. What causes obscurity in Eliot's poetry? The reader thinks a work is obscure when he doens't catch the correct links between the different parts, in particular in the first reading.

7 What does she underline of Eliot's style? Virginia Woolf likes Eliot's style because he can create intense emotion in the reader, on the countrary the traditional poets aren't able to convey the same energy.

8in what ways are the modernist Eliot, Woolf and Joyce similar? They put their attention to the hidden side of the human being and they want to study it and represent it. Moreover they are all interested in the past, in particular in tradition.
