Ulysses is a poem writtten by Alfred Tennyson and it is an example of dramatic a
monologue. Right from the title the intelligent reader understands that the
poem deals with the story of the mythological hero. But the reader is immediately
displaced because of the unusual image of the hero conveyed by the poet.
As a matter of fact ulyusse is old and he doesn't like his wife and his land. There are a
few expression that well convey this idea, such as "still hearth" and "barren crags" referring to his
homeland and such as "unequal laws" and "savage race"
referring to his people. Despite his age he wants to live life fully, till the
end.
At the beginning of the poem there are such expression which belong to the semantic
field of progress, such as profit.
Going on reading Ulysses expresses a very modern concept, he asserts that knowledge is
not only personal but it is made up by relationships.
