Ulysses affirms that his past experiences created his self, his behavior, his way of thinking, in this way the figure of "arch" is a symbol of openness towards new experiences, because the confine of what Ulysses doesn't know will always change, and his knowledge will always extend. In Ulysses opinion is "dull" the pause, because Ulysses has little time left to live, it's very important to give meaning to the time is passing. For Ulysses is important to use the time in an appropriate way, it's a waste of time if people don't do anything. Ulysses declares that it is boring to stay in one place; to stay in one place is to pretend that all there is to life is the simple act of breathing. Life is breath. Ulysses underlines the importance of time, especially for old people like him, every single moment bring people to new experiences that enrich people's way of thinking. He wishes to follow like a sinking star. Tennyson uses words like stars, suns to show how people in past used nature to indicate time, to orientate. The star goes beyond the human thought, stars help Ulysses to continue his voyages and to embody new cultures, new experiences, something useful for life.
