Geoffrey Chaucher is the poets poet because he was the first to use English as a litterary language (to use to English to write literature)
His main work is the famous “The Canterbury Tales” tales that the pilgrims going to Canterbury told during the jauruey.
In the prologue to the Canterbury Tales he introduces the carachters of his tales, so that the reader can gain an idea of all the social classes of the Middle Ages.
The 29 pilgrims of his tales belong to different classes and well represent the vices and virtutes of all the different people from the different social classes. They went to Canterbury because that was the kind of tourism of the Middle Ages. They went to pray on the grave and on the shrime of Thomas à Becket.
Geoffrey Chaucher started to write the tales in 1387. They were written in verse, and the tales create a framework that keeps the 24 tales togheter.
The device of the framework was borrowed from Boccaccio.
The Canterbury Tales were not completed. They are made up of parts in verse and parts in prose.
The line is generally the rhyming couplet. The kind of line is the “Iambic Pentameters”
The first copy was a manuscript because printing was invented in the 15th century.
We can know what the society of Middle Ages was like: Military, Elergy, Middle class and the Trades.
Geoffrey Chaucher was very good at creating characterization.
Geoffrey Chaucher resourted to different skills. He also used parody to create lively characters. Each one has an economic and social dimensione, they are not one - side.
Geoffrey Chacher tried to create characters that were very near reality that is people that had relationship.
