The reader understands some facts through the layer of information and on the layer of the character: Ulysses has a romantic nature, looking for new passions with a dynamic idea of living life, the reader conveys to the idea that Ulysses is aware of little time left to him "gray spirit" "a little remains to be lived". There is the image of the limit, in order to underline the idea of a person who cannot imagine a border of knowledge and any religious limit. The symbol of the "sinking star" is an analogy with the old age of Ulysses, the problem of time is always present, the theme of getting old allows the writer and the reader to get in touch with the theme of life.
Ulysses desires to travel: in this way life is seen as an experience, with negative and positive moments.
line 33: the speaking voice introduces his son. There is the alliterative sound "m" which reinforces the idea of property in relation with the word "own". Ulysses tells us about his love for his son, is a possessive way. Ulysses thinks is duty governing all over the country, so he leaves the power to his son, who is able to discern what is wrong or right, he has a slow prudence ( slow steps) typical of Victorian age ( it's a Victorian compromise); since Ulysses is passionate, he cannot govern the country, looking after this people, his son, who is very slow, careful is able to do it. Ulysses takes distances from common duties, and underlines the difference between him and his son, "He works his work, I mine". Telemachus is described by Ulysses' point of view.
The last section moves the perspective of Ulysses to the places he would like to visit, thinking about sees, which is dark. While Ulysses is talking, his sailors are silent, they represent the silent listeners , he fells close to them, and they are seen as "souls" they make a lot of efforts, they face the difficulties of sees, people who have a structure, they are present even if there is bed weather. In front of difficulties they oppose, create a balance between the rational and the heart ( different from the Victorian age, which has a Manichean principle). Ulysses suggests that even if people is old, they can see a lot of interesting things, it's an invitation of silence and reflection.
Ulysses is an epic men because he believes in pluralistic society and gods. Ulysses refers to natural symbols that represent his soul. Human qualities are highlighted and are the most important.
The setting is a symbol for the old age, it tells that the day is going to finish which means the death is going to come.
3 sections: 1st has the function to introduce the mythical figure in a specific context: despite the old age, he is still passionate, proud, energetic, ready to fight for what he believes. The introductory scene analysis psychology, the speech, he is clearly aware that once identity is dependent of what he lives.
