The first part is about Ulysses' comeback and his will to travel; than the poem goes on with Ulysses' own description of his travels. All of them gives a contribute to what he is at the moment, "I am a part of all that I have met": it seems to be a modernist vision of the world. It anticipates clearly Modernism. He compares his experiences to an arch, where the end looks fading. He does not want to stop travelling, even if he is old and probably he is going to die soon. The image gives an heavy idea of voyage, but it is his satisfaction as well. It is a shame not to travel anymore, not to visit new places, not to discover new countries. Ulysses just does not want to "breathe" and live an ordinary life. That seems to him like a waste of time. Only three days are important, before death. Then he introduces his son Telemachus, who is going to be his successor. He will have to govern his people, they are "rugged", he will have to give the example and improve their habits. That is his work, not exactly Ulysses'. The old king just want to travel again. He sees the port and remembers all his adventures, his mariners, his seas. His is conscious he is old, but he still believes to be able to do something, even now, before dying. He invites his mates to go on the water for the last time, it is never too late. He wants to go over the sunset, where none has gone before. He wants and feels able to push the limits of the human being, to challenge Gods. He is not strong as when he was young, but his will, his heart is stronger than ever. That is his power. Maybe he will die during his voyage, but he will never break down, that' s for sure.
