In the first part of the text there is Oliver’s description. Oliver was a thin, pale child with a great character. In this presentation there is the contrast between the weak and fragile physical appearance and the determinate spirit of the child.
In the second part there is the description of the setting in which Oliver lived and the other characters. The writer described the master with typical gestures of Catholic rites and he seemed the priest and his followers. Children were hungry and malnourished because they had a difficult life and Dickens to underline this aspect used irony and he said that all children had appetite. Also the writer highlighted through exaggeration that the bowls are polished by spoon of childrend and they didn’t leave a small part of their meals.
Children were described in terms of nature, because it is human nature to be similar and wild when they suffered of starvation.
One evening, the children got togheter and decided to go Oliver, at the end of the meal to the master to ask for more food because they were suffering greatly from hunger.
Oliver, the appointed day came to the master and asked for more food. At the beginning the reaction was astonishment, after he decides to send the child to the headmaster. This man threatened Oliver to be hung. This scene was described through a lot of repetitions and writer wanted to emphasize the absurdity of the behavior of master. He hadn’t the courage to face the situation and he preferred to leave the responsibility to another person, however he acted as a weak.
