The extract "Oliver wants some more" is taken from Charles Dickens' novel Oliver Twist. Oliver Twist is the proper name of a child of nine years old living in a workhouse, where he faces exploitation and low living conditions, typical Victorian themes. The third person omniscient narrator presents Oliver by exploiting his condition to make him be more realistic. The reader is provided with a sketch of his physical appearance. The aim of the sketch is to focus the reader's attention to his unhealthy condition which is suggested by definite language choices like small, spare, pale, diminutive. It is by means of adjectives that the idea of Oliver is created and what's more the use of the adverb does not leave any space to make the reader have a different idea. Whatever the reader thinks, is totally filtered by the narrator. He uses the telling technique because he can guide the reader to think. The aim of Victorian novel was to teach. In addition, Charles Dickens provides a useful example of the influence of Darwinism in the way of thinking of Victorian society: the use of language such as nature, inheritance, implanted, underline in the language the effect of natural selection. Oliver's breast, which is simply a part of his body it's described as if it were a room. In this he provides the example of the effect of exaggeration in the result of grotesque. There is also the denounce of the problem, in the way Charles Dickens criticizes the workhouse, the institution that offers a shelter to the pores. The opposition between the verb to expand and the adjective spare referred to the diet adds to the grotesque. The narrator also adds irony to the precarious condition of the child also with a rhetoric language. The narrator attentions now shifts to the place where Oliver finds himself: in a closed space, in a cellar which is a "coal cellar". The word coal cellar immediately reminds us the idea of the Industrial Revolution, as it was its fuel. He's not alone, he's with some of his mates and they have been locked because they have probably complained because they were hungry. Dickens is creating a climax effect. Education was, therefore, repressive and aggressive because school master were afraid of a possible reaction and they called for violence and aggressiveness. The narrator's attention now again shifts to the place ( a large stone-house) where children were supposed to have their lunch.
