Notest about the Extract Murdering the Innocents from Hard Times (11/5/12)
The extract is taken from Charles Dickens' novel Hard Times, published in 1854.
At the very beginning of the extract there is the name of a man, Mr Gradgrind, followed by the word "sir": the reader may think there are two men who are talking.
The narrator is presenting Thomas Gradgrind and the first form of identification of the character is his name and surname. His surname recalls the idea of someone who is chewing.
The narrator uses anaphoric syntax and ripetitive language to present Thomas Gradgrind. Then he goes on presenting some objects Mr Gradgrind usually uses, that are measure instruments.
At the end of the extract the narrator uses other names to identify him. The names are known by everyone because they are important people's names. It is possible to understand that this man could have been all these other men.
