In the second sequence of Charles Dickens extract from Hard Times the writer goes on still appealing to the language of sense, focusing now on the watch. He describes the design of every building of the city as something monotonous and without any particular difference. In fact, everything seems to be exactly the same, as there's no difference in the appearance of the infirmary towards the jail or the town hall. Also, Charles Dickens underlines that everything in the town is only based on utility, called by him "fact". Furthermore, by the repetition of the noun fact he creates a negative attitude towards the entire city, which is just seen as a materialistic entity.
