Up to  5 B - The Victorian Novel and UtilitarianismUp to task document list

The extract is taken from the 5th chapter of Charles Dicken's Hard Times  where the author describes the city of Coketown.

The narrator is a third person omniscient and intrusive. The name "Coketown" reminds to the fuel used in factories.

The author uses dominant colors are red (blood), and the dark color typical of smoke. Using these colours the author talks about the effects of industrialization.

Describing the city the novelist exploits the power of the language.

Moreover C.Dickens focuses his attention on the description of the smoke coming out from the chimneys which is described as serpents. This factle makes the reader reflect on the idea of knowledge.

The productive process described goes on all the day. This means that the air is polluted.

All what is described is anthropomorphized.

The description moves  from the general to the peculiar.

The  architectural design of the town is poor. The metaphors used suggest that the place seems to be a place for animals and what's worst there seems to be no possibility of change. The second sequence is devoted to a metaphorical description of work.
