Up to  5 B - The Victorian Novel and UtilitarianismUp to task document list

The extract "Oliver wants some more" is taken from Charles Dickens' novel Oliver Twist.

Oliver Twist is the proper name of a child of nine years old living in a workhouse.

The third person omniscient narrator presents Oliver by exploiting his condition. The author describes his physical appearancein order to focus the reader's attention to his unhealthy condition. The description of Oliver make the reader feel pathos.

The aim of Victorian novel was to teach.

Oliver's breast is described as if it were a room. So this is an example of exaggeration which creates the effect of grotesque.

The narrator also adds irony to the precarious condition of the child also with a rhetoric language.

Oliver is  not alone, he's with some of his mates and they have been locked because they have probably complained because they were hungry. Dickens is creating a climax effect.

Then the narrator's attention shifts to the place where children have their lunch.
