· The War of the Roses (1455-1485):
o Civil war between the House of the York (white rose) and of the Lancaster (red rose)
o Accession to the throne by Henry VII of Tudor
1509-1547 Henry VIII
· Six marriages
· Children: Mary Tudor (with Catherine of Aragon), Elizabeth I (with Anne Boleyn), Edward VII (with Jane Seymour)
1547-1553 Edward VI
1553-1558 Mary I
· Mary Tudor married Philip II king of Spain. She suppressed the protestants (300 were burn → Bloody Mary).
1558-1603 Elizabeth I (no heirs)
· In 1588 England defeated the Spanish Armada sent by Philip II (cousin of Elizabeth) → rise of English navy
1603-1625 James I (James IV of Scotland)
· Son of Mary Stuart, queen of Scots (Elizabeth I's cousin, she was imprisoned and executed for plotting to murder Elizabeth)
