The praface of the Picture of Dorian Gray is the manifesto of the Aestethic movement. Oscar Wild explains the new canons and features art has to follow, in total contrast with the Victorian vision. The Preface is a list of very short sentences with an ephigrammatic effect, indeed they are written to stick in the reader's mind. According to Ocard Wild art aim is to hide the artist and reveal itself, indeed what is personal as in the romantic movement is rejected. A central position is given to Beauty: the writer's aim is to pursue beautiful things leaving out morality and ethic. Art is based on a superficial level and symbolic level and it is created by a man who uses thought and language. Furthermore art is like music, indeed it has to mix form and language, and it has to mirror the reader and change his way to see the world.
