SCHEME ON THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION

•·         It is an argumentative. It is an essay

•·         It supports a thesis --> the Industrial Revolution produces wealth without well-being.

•·         It is organized in 10 paragraphs

•·         The Industrial Revolution --> substitution of the medieval regulation

 

It brought radical changes between the end of 18th and the beginning of 19th century

 

It led to growth of two system of thought:

•·         Socialism

•·         Economic Science

 

It had four chief landmarks:

•·         Adam Smith's "Wealth of Nations" --> he investigated the causes of poverty

•·         Malthus' "Essay on Population" -->  he concentrates on causes of poverty

•·         Ricardo's "Principles of political economy and taxation" --> he concentrates on distribution of wealth

•·         John Stuart Mill's "Principle of political economy"--> he evidences the consequence of competition and analysed  distribution of wealth

Growth of population --> the text is supported by quantity dates

Decline of agrarian population    

 

Agricultural changes which led to this decrease in the rural population:

•·         Destruction of the common field system of cultivation

•·         Enclosure system

•·         Consolidation of small farms into large ones

 

 

Period of the great agricultural advance:

•·         Breed of cattle

•·         Rotation of crops

•·         Use of steam-plough

 

Manufacture revolution --> four great inventions Textile Industry:

•·         Spinning-jenny

•·         Water-frame

•·         Crompton's mule

•·         Self-acting mule

In 1769 --> Steam-Engine   J.Watt

Iron Industry:

•·         Smelting by pit-coal

•·         Steam-engine to blust furnaces

New ways of communication:

•·         Canals

•·         Bridges

•·         Roads

•·         1st Railroad

 

This means:

•·         An increase of commerce

•·         Substitution of factory system for domestic system

 

Increase of prices in rents caused by:

•·         Money invested by improvements

•·         Enclosure system

•·         Consolidation of farms

•·         High price of corn

All these innovations brought to new social classes:

•·         One side we had great capitalist employers. They made enormous fortunes

•·         Other side we had working people who often suffered misery and lived with no sanity. The were very poor

 

Trade Unions began to rise 1824

 

 

The Industrial revolution produces wealth without well-being.
