The title of the
text shows us immediately the content of the text: it's the explanation and the
analysis of the causes and the consequences of the Industrial Revolution.



All the text is
organized into 10 paragraphs with different content.



-The first one
is introductory. It goes from line 1 to 3.



-The second one
includes lines 4 to 31. It's rich of argumentation: the meaning of the
Industrial Revolution as a substitution of competition for the medieval
regulations, judgments about its importance and explanation. The author inserts
four title of different books written by different writers. Those books are
important to explain the mind's evolution before, during and after the Revolution.



-The third
paragraph goes from line 32 to 39. Here are described two important changes:
growth of population in cities and the opposite decline in the population in
the countryside. The argumentation is enriched by some data.



-The following
paragraph goes from line 40 to 57. The author gives his personal opinion about
the Revolution referring to the Agrarian Revolution. He poses a question to
introduce the topic, in particular to explain the causes that led to the
decrease in rural population (It's joined with the third paragraph).The writer
individuates three main causes: The destruction of common-field system of
cultivation, the enclosures of common lands and the consolidation of small
farms into large.



Finally he gives
quotations of three important figures (Laurence, Eden and Cobbett) to confirm
and show his theory.



-The next
paragraph (lines from 58 to 71) reports the consequences and the advancements of
the Agricultural changes: an improvement of breed of cattle and an introduction
of the rotation of crops due to the consequence of the more scientific
overtures in agriculture.



-Next paragraph
(lines 72 to 95) list some inventions and tolls that make work easier and
increase the industry, in particular the cotton one. After that, the attention
is focused on workers. In particular, the writer wants to underline the changes
with the previous situation. Finally the author writes about iron industry
which had a relevant increase thanks to the new inventions.



-The following
section deals with the advance of means of communication which promote
commerce. In particular, the new canal system, roads and railroads are very
important. The result is also the substitution of factory system to domestic
system.



-Later are given
quantitative data about the rise of rents which is due to the new system of
production and distribution of wealth.



-The ninth
paragraph describes the changes that occur in the relations between capitalist
employers and workers. The former become richer even if they don't take part in
the work process, the latter have to work harder and they live in miserable
conditions.



-Finally the
author gives his personal judgment. According to him the free competition must
be controlled by legislation.
