“Essay” is written by T. S. Eliot. It is one of the series of talks broadcast in Germany. The audience were German people.

The thesis is that English is the richest language to write poetry. Eliot doesn’t say that great poets were English but he would pointed out that English had a large vocabulary and the poets could commanded it in the total wealth.

The richness of English is the fact that it made up by a variety of elements. It has a Germanic foundation, Scandinavian element that it took in Danish conquest. After this there is the Norman French element, new words coined from Latin and a considerable importance of Celtic. The wealth of English language in the poetry is in the variety of metrical elements. There is the rhythm of early Saxon verse, of Norman French, of Welsh and the influence of Latin and Greek studies. Besides English is composed by different sources. In fact this statement doesn’t say that English produced greatest poets. The writer expresses that a great poet makes his language a great language. But it also true that greates people excel in one art rather than another, for example Italy and France in painting, Germany in Music and English in poetry. However a country hasn’t the exclusive possession of one art and there are period in which one of these has major influence to others.

In fact during the Romantic period the English poetry dominated but in the second half of nineteenth century the poetry was great in France.

There aren’t nations and languages that cultivated the same art as in neighbouring countries. If we don’t know literature it is hard to understand the context and the texts.

The ability of literature to renew itself, to continue to new activity and to discover new way to use the words are to receive and assimilate influences from foreign country and to return and learn the origins. If there isn’t some relation with other literature poetry becomes poor and deterorate and all literature has his origin in the history.
