Passa la nave mia colma d’oblio

Passa la nave mia colma d’oblio
per aspro mare, a mezza notte il verno,
enfra Scilla et Caribdi; et al governo
siede ’l signore, anzi ’l nimico mio.

A ciascun remo un penser pronto et rio
che la tempesta e ’l fin par ch’abbi a scherno;
la vela rompe un vento humido eterno
di sospir’, di speranze, et di desio.

Pioggia di lagrimar, nebbia di sdegni
bagna et rallenta le già stanche sarte,
che son d’error con ignorantia attorto.

Celansi i duo mei dolci usati segni;
morta fra l’onde è la ragion et l’arte,
tal ch’incomincio a desperar del porto.

Denotative analysis:

The sonnet consists of fourteen lines in Petrarch’s sonnet the reader recognized the typical structure of Italian sonnet.

The first octave introduced the problem, created a comparison between, the speaker life and ship, travailing in tournamenting seas at midnight. The speaker is warred by private feels that are so sad that it seems not to care even of the weather condition.

He sighs, he has desired and hope.

There follows the sestet where his pessimistic is reported: he weeps, he regrets as well as the condition of the weather puts his voyage at risk.

In the ending tierce the speaker hides his feeling in the same way as he can  see the stars. He seems able to used season and even worst to be able to search harbour.

It goes with out seems that there is an apparent analogy between the poet life and the voyage progress unfortunately such life doesn’t sound easy  but unveils difficult, torment, that all together seem to make the poet unable to came to the autonomous solution of his pains.
