TITLE
The title suggests that this text is about a particular historical process called the “Industrial Revolution”. In addition to that, the words “chief features” make me think that the author will give synthetic information about the topic.
DENOTATIVE ANALYSIS
In the first paragraph the author gives the reader the definition of the process, pointing out its particular importance. Then he names four three authors that he considers exponents of the Economic science, one of the two system of thought developed during the Industrial Revolution: Economic Science.
In the second paragraph he names one last author which further developed the Economic Science’s thought.
In the third paragraph the author comes to the facts, giving percentages about growth of population and decline of rural population.
In the fourth paragraph he analyses the causes of the decrease in rural population giving numbers.
In the fifth one he explains the innovation in agriculture’s field, naming four innovations attributed to the new scientific approach of landowners.
In the sixth and seventh paragraphs he analyses the developments in the mechanical industry, starting from the textile industry, moving to iron industry and concluding with means of communication.
In the eight paragraph he reflects about the revolution in distribution of wealth moving, in the ninth paragraph, to the social changes caused by Industrial Revolution.
In the tenth and last paragraph, he analyses the causes of misery among working people.
CONNOTATIVE ANALYSIS
This text seems to be purely informative, but in reality it’s an argumentative text. The thesis is stated in the last three lines. So all the facts, numbers, percentages and datas given to the reader are argumentation to that thesis. In addition to that, connectors, and concrete language are typical of the argumentative text. Also the structure, characterized by paragraphs, is a textual spy of the genre.
Argumentations:
· Comparative(e.g. the comparison between the different percentages of population growth)
· Informative (e.g. the innovations in the iron industry field)
· Supportive: the four authors introduced
