The Joeys, Men Are
"Men are" is a song by “The Joeys”.
The title make us expect a song based on something connected with men, like usual behaviours or habits.
The song is made up of seven short lines and everyone starts with the word “men”.
The song, literally, lists some observations on men, showing their “powerful” side.
It uses the concrete and informal language more than the abstract one. The verbs of the song are: to be, to have, to drink and to do. The first line is an introduction: it repeats three times the phrase “Men are”. Other three lines have an adjective at their end and the last ones have a noun. There is a reduced use of punctuation, it is used only in the first and in the middle line.
The song is ironic. Irony is expressed by the adjectives and the verbs, since they refer to traits, behaviours and habits men think they have and they consider qualities.
The anaphoric use of the word “men” underlines the irony as do the informal and concrete language.
The language is concrete in order to express that men cannot think about something abstract.
Like informal language, even the little use of the verbs (mainly common verbs) and the simple syntax, want to express the roughness and the “ignorance” of men.
Punctuation is not used a lot in order to let the phrases flow quickly and hit their target.
