MEN ARE

"Men are" is a rap song written by The Joeys. It is about some general features of the male personality and physique. The poem enumerates principally qualities and faults of men. For example, they are described as strong, brave and fearless, but they are also tough, surly and rough. They like football, cars and fighting, climbing the mountains, but they also make war and bombs. Finally, the last three lines underline women's different way of thinking and the impossibility for men to understand clearly women's opinions about men's actions. This aspect is highlighted by the enjambment between the 47th and 48th lines, which marks the verbs "see" and "call".
The song is made up of 48 free verses. Every two or three lines there is one longer and more accentuated than the others. According to the rap music, the sentences are short and concise, the rhythm is rapid and involving. Besides, it is used informal language with slang terms and short forms.
The musicality depends mainly on the rhymes. There are also some alliterative sounds (sing songs/have hobbies and hairy ears/don't dance) and the constant anaphora of the expression "men are".
I think the song represents the reality only partially; as a matter of fact, there are some features generalized (for example, the hobbies listed) or exaggerated (for instance, walking through blizzards in string vests).
