After reading the title I expect the text to give explanation about the most important features of industrial revolution. Furthermore from the word chief I understand that the writer wants to underline the importance of this period.
This is an argumentative essay, it is organized into 10 paragraphs, each with a own function. The first paragraph has only an introductive function. It gives the reader information about the topic, that is the Industrial revolution. The second paragraph( lines 4-32) is organized into different argumentation:
1. The writer gives a definition of industrial revolution;
2. A judgment of this phenomenon is given;
3. There is the quotation of four important publication of those times: Adam smith's Wealth of nations, Mathus' Essay on population, Ricardo's Principles of Political Economy, John Stuart Mill's Principles of Political economy.
The paragraph number three goes from line 33 to line 40. This paragraph is about the growth of population, as a matter of facts it provides data about the percentage of growth . it also compares the growth of population with the gradual decline of agricultural population.
the next paragraph ( lines 41-58) follows an evaluative kind of argumentation, indeed it provide a question about the main causes of the decrease of agrarian population. The most effective causes according to the writer are the destruction of common fields, the enclosure of common and waste lands. To support his thesis the writer quotes extracts from essays written by three important lords of that century.
The fifth paragraph is an informative paragraph and it deals with the improvement of agrarian system. In the second part of this section the writer gives a judgment on this particular phenomenon.
The following section is organized into three different sections:
1. The explanation in chronological order of changes in the cotton industry;
2. The positive and negative consequences of these changes;
3. A comparison between the consequences of changes in the cotton industry and in the iron industry.
The paragraph which goes from line 97 to 115 is about the improvement of communication system. In this section are provided the improvements introduced and their effects on economy, as example the increase of commerce.
The following paragraph deals with the enormous rise in rents. In this paragraph the writer provides some quantitative data about this phenomenon and he explains also a few causes of this rise.
The last paragraphs deal with the social changes occurred during the revolution. The main change quoted by the writer are the large amount of money made by employers and this led to a class conflict and high prices. The essay finishes with a judgment of this revulotion.
