HE WISHES FOR CLOTHS OF HEAVEN, W.B. Yeats

Had I the heavens' embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half-light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.

The title of this poem is "He wishes for cloths of heaven" by William Butler Yeats. The title suggest the writer would give something to someone, something of important to someone of important.

The poem is made up of a stanza that contains eight lines. It is organized into alliteration rhyme (ABAB CDCD). The first and the third line finish with the word "cloths" while the second and the forth line finish with the word "light" and so on. A same word is repeated at least twice in two different lines. The rhymes in the poem convey a romantic atmosphere with soft words. Each word creates a different feeling that can be aware of in various ways. The poem contents sad colours enwrought with some brilliant colours that creates an idea of hope in the deep of the darkness.

The protagonist of the poem would demonstrate his love to his loved one. He would give her/him cloths of heaven, a place of paradise. The cloths, being of heaven, contain blue, dim and dark colours enwroughted with golden and silver lights (that can be interpreted as stars, that is the writer's thoughts). They describe also the different and the time of the day. He would spread them under her/his feet, like a sign of respect and faith. The writer has tender a intense feeling for her/him.

The cloths are imaginative, they are in his mind, because he is poor and has only his dreams. They are all that he possesses and symbolized his love. He would give her/him everything that he has. "Tread softly because you tread on my dreams" means she/he could easily break his heart and he trust to her/him. He would show that one does not need cloths of heaven to love, but dreams and feelings.
