Textuality » 3A Interacting
"I, too" is the title of the text and makes me think the poet believes he is involved in something with other people or he plays a part in society.
The text is a lyrical poem because it is written in the first person. Besides, it provides the reader with poet's ideas and what he feels, his emotions and his experiences. I think the poet is a man because in the second line he says that he is the "darker brother". If he were a woman he would say "I am the darker sister".
The poem is made up of two stanzas. In the first one there are 7 lines and in the second one eleven. It is in free verse.
The division into two stanzas underlines the difference between the present and the future of the poet. In the first part of the poem he tells us what he has to do now and in the second one what he will do, using the shall/will future.
In the poem there aren't rhymes or figures of speech , but it has got a rhythm, defined by punctuation.
The first line and the last one begin with the same words "I, too", and finish with the word "America".
I believe this is a nice poem telling about discriminations and unjustices.
