I, too.

From the title the reader expects the poem to be about someone who does or is something but he is not considered as other people who do or are the same thing.

The poem is about a person who is not well accepted in his family. In the second part the poem changes and the person starts to be taken into consideration.

The poem is made up of two stanzas. The first one is composed of seven lines, the second one of two lines.

In the first stanza, the first two lines start with the same word (I) and so do the last two ones (and). Besides, the first line of the poem is related to the last one, they are the start and the end of the poem and represent change (sing -> am). The fourth line of the first stanza is the same of the third line of the second one and it is used to introduce the same situation. Each stanza represents a different time and ths suggests something has changed.

The poem expresses the discrimination of black people in America. It explains that even if  they feel they are American, they are not accepted, but the end of the first stanza suggests that situation is about to change and all this happens.

So, in the second stanza, has completly changed: now black people are not discriminated and they can express their capacities, as the ninth line communicates to the reader. The end of the second stanza expresses people have understood black people are not different and they are sorry for what they did.
