  I,too

The title of the poem is "I, too". From reading the title the reader expects the poem to be about someone that would be accepted in something. It raises curiosity in the reader who wants to be accepted and in what.

The poem is made up of two stanzas. The first is organized into seven lines and the second into eleven lines. The line "When company comes" appears in both stanzas. The poem does not present any alliteration and rhyme. The sound is strong.

The first stanza sums up the life of the writer and all that he/she feels in the present. The first line makes the reader understand that he/she feels an American because he/she is the darker brother. It means he/she lives with white people. The protagonist can not eat in the kitchen when the company comes; he/she is sent into the kitchen because the company does not consider him/her like the white people. The writer listens to them and obeys the order. He/she does not care about it and eats well, growing strong. The last three lines explain to the reader the writer does not care even if he/she does not eat with the others because in the very near future he will eat with the company.

The second stanza is about the future and the writer hopes. The reader can understand all that since the first word of the stanza "tomorrow". The word anticipates aspects of the future. The stanza explains to the reader the writer will be at the table when the company comes and nobody will say to him/her to go to eat into the kitchen. He/she will be there with them, discussing different things. The company will be ashamed because he will demonstrate he/she is a person like other people. They will see how beautiful he/she is. They will recognize his/her features and positive characteristics. The protagonist has got something important that he has never made people see.

The stanza closes with the line "I, too, am America". It means he/she is a persona like others.
