"Oranges are not the Only Fruit" is a book written by Jeanette Winterson in 1985.
Right from the title we can understand that there are also other fruits and so that oranges are not the only possible fruit to eat. Reading the novel we'll find out that oranges symbolized the road humans must do to remain on a right way; so there isn't only one road but there is also an unconventional way of live, as much legitimate.
The book is divided in nine chapters. The first is "Introduction" in which the writer shows reader the background of the book's drafting (Jeanette Winterson's poor life condition), the book's purpose (to face through a young girl's events, common big questions of life such as sexuality, love, loss) and the book's literary story.
The second is "Genesis". Genesis is the first Bible book and it narrates world's creation, humans' creation by God and life of humans firstly created. So the chapter has the present title because is about main character's first view of life taught by her adoptive mother, a Christ's soldier. In this chapter we find a short story which talk about a brilliant and sensitive princess who took in charge a small village left to her by an hunchback. This story linked with Jeanette's story because in her mother plans she will become a missionary and she will guide a religious community.
The third chapter is "Exodus". Exodus is the second book of the Bible and it is about Jews liberation. So this chapter has this title because it is about Jeanette experience outside her world created by her adoptive mother. Jeanette has a particular obsessive religious view of the world, but she will find out that in the common life, for example at traditional school, this view is a lot different.
