“Oranges are not the only fruit” was written during the 1983 and 1984 by Jeanette Winterson. At that time she shared two rooms with an actress. They were poor without money and a job. The novelist said that dinginess is death to a writer. She lived in a place with damp and dinginess and she admired the great personality of the past that wore clean clothes when they were depressed. In London the writer was unhappy and she was thinking to leaving but after she started to write the book. The novel was different of others because the readers could have different opinion about the arguments. But her publisher didn’t think about the opinion of her bosses or markets and merits. The foundation of her career were small bookshops and word of mouth. It is difficult for an editor to launch a new writer because companies tried to have big profits. This book is an experimental novel, it had a complicate narrative structure and people can read in spirals. In this novel the family life was a sham and it showed the meaning of love for church. The protagonist was a common person with all daily problems.
Genesis is the title of the first chapter; it is the first book of Christian Bible and Jewish Torah, it is an historical work and starts with the creation of the world. In this first chapter the writer presented the mother and the relation between her mother and her father. The mother was so religious, determinated, obstinate. In her concepition, world was divided into friends an emenies. Enemies were in relation to evil and friends with God. This chapter is an explanation of protagonist life with her parents. The protagonist spent a lot of time with her mother, they went in church, they did religious activities and they took walks. The mother explained her thought about the world and religion to the daughter. Jeanette didn’t attend school because her mother was againist it. The story of the princess is an example to explain the lie of her mother. The princess decided to be in charge of the village and her mother decided tobe in charge of God.
Exodus is the second book of Christian Bible and Jewish Torah, it describes slavery and liberation of Jews. In this chapter, protagonist had the obligation to attend school and it had an illness at the ears. Furthermore there are description about life of protagonist.
