Learning Paths » 5A Interacting
The first chapter is named Genesis, as the first book of the Bible, in the Old Testament. Genesis in the Bible is the book about the beginning of God's creation. As a result the intelligent reader expects a novel concerned with religion, probably a religion believing in the Old Testament as a holy book. After that he/she should suppose the first chapter is about the origins of the protagonist or of his/her situation, which probably will changes and develops the story:.
Genesis literally means "origin" or "generation". So since religion is in the centre of the life of the character, the choice is functional. Right from the start Janette's lifestyle is clear: she is an adopted child and her mother is obsessed with religion, she is a fanatic. She is obsessed by sex as well and that's why she adopted a baby and didn't want to have one naturally. She watches everything in a religious way and her opinion it is always right. The mother rules the house, she has a patronising role. The father is passive and doe not seem to play a relevant role.
