DOWN BUT
NOT OUT (The
Economist, October 22nd 2011)
The article
is about Italian economy, in particular it is about Italy's prime minister
Silvio Berlusconi.
Just
reading the title the reader can note the words "down" and "out" and he can
imagine that Italy's economic situation is bad.
Reading the
text the reader understands Silvio Berlusconi's situation: he lost votes but he still survives. On
October 14th Berlusconi won a confidence vote by 316 votes to 301
and a day later riots broke out in Rome.
He has been
indicted of paying an underage prostitute and of tax fraud, so his approval
rating has fallen from 35% to 24%, but
he still survives.
Outside the PDL, the
clamor for Berlusconi to go is deafening and also much Italians may want him
out, but the confidence vote showed yet again that the opposition, despite the
acquisition of Mr. Fini and a handful of followers, does not have the firepower
to oust the prime minister.
