STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS.

 

The title of the essay “The chief features of the Industrial Revolution” immediately illustrates the theme of the essay and so it create consistency with the content of the essay because it deals with the most relevant aspects connected to the Industrial Revolution.

 

The argumentation is developed into different paragraph, each having a specific function.

 

The first one is an introductory paragraph and covering the first three lines is the shortest of the essay and it is a declaration of intention.

 

Paragraph two goes from line 4 to line 31 and it is organized into different argumentations; the writer gives the reader: a definition of the Industrial Revolution, a judgment and an explanation of its consequences. The writer also provides the title of the most important books written by the four great English economist.

 

The third paragraph (from line 32 to line 39) is expository because it deals with some fact of the Industrial Revolution, in particular it is about the great growth of population and the relative positive decline in the agricultural population.

 

On the following paragraph (line 40 to 57) the writer poses a problem: what agricultural changes were brought by the decrease in the rural population? And he also provides three possible causes: the destruction of the common-field system of cultivation, the enclosure of common and waste lands  and finally the consolidation of small farms into large.                                                                                     

After that there are some quote of three important men.

 

The fifth paragraph, from line 58 to 71, is about the improvements caused by the agricultural advance, for examples it was introduced the rotation of crops and so the substitution of scientific for unscientific culture.

 

Another expository paragraph is the sixth that goes from line 72 to 96; it poses the reader attention on the growth of industry illustrating the most important invention and their consequences.

 

The seventh paragraph (from 97 to 114) makes the reader understand that the expansion of trade is due to the great advance made in the means of communication (canal system; turnpike road; railroad).

 

The following paragraph provides some data about the rise in rents caused by money invested in improvements, enclosure system and so on.

 

Finally on the last paragraph the writer points out his opinion on the Industrial Revolution by saying “competition may produce wealth without producing well-being”.
