Post modernism is a movement which developed during the beginning of 20th century. During this period people did no longer believed in the concept of  authority, or in that of a centre or  a God and for this reason everybody was questioning the idea of a self. the result was that even the idea of a  meaning in life was differed.

An  example of the  movement can be found in J. Winterson’s novel Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, that is a new rendering of  the Bible structure in view of new Postmodernist aims.. Indeed in this period the reader  has an important role because he is called to make at least one of the possible meanings and interpretations oif  what he is reading.

Another example of Postmodernist fiction is Nice Work, a novel written by David Lodge, an idealist writer.

The book describes the  encounter between Robyn Penrose, a feminist university teacher specialising in the industrial novel and women's writing, and Vic (ricalling the idea of Victory ) Wilcox, the manager of an engineering firm. The relationship that develops between the unlikely pair reveals the weaknesss in each character. Robyn's academic position is precarious because of buudget cuts. Vic has to deal with industrial politics at his firm.
