"NICE WORK" by David Lodge: CHARACTERIZATION of ROBYN PENROSE

1. David Penrose puts Robyn in opposition with Vic.
2. She has the same name of Robyn Hood, a famous character of English Literature.
3. The writer talks about her job: she's a Temporary Lecturer in English Literature and so she doesn't practice a stable job.
4. Mr. Lodge describes Robyn's way of thinking about the relation between the novel and Capitalism:
• The rise of the novel coincided with the rise of Capitalism (‘700);
• The triumph of the novel coincided with the triumph of Capitalism (‘800);
• Both are expressions of a secularized Protestant ethic;
• Both depend on the idea of an autonomous individual "self";
• The novelist is a capitalist of the imagination: "He or she invents a product which consumers didn't know they wanted until it is made available.
5. He explains her idea about literature: there is no author who creates a work of fictions "ab nihilo", but every text is a product of lots of sources.
6. The author describes her first day of the winter term.
