In the extract Robyn's character is presented to the reader. She is Temporary Lecturer in English Literature and believes in capitalism and in her opinion it is strictly connected to the novel and to modernism and postmodernism. Both are expressions of a secularized Protestant ethic, both dependent on the idea of an autonomous individual self. As a consequence the novelist is a capitalist: for example Daniel Defoe was a merchant. According to Robyn capitalism and the novel are founded on the "self concept". There isn't just one centre and there are infinite discourses.  All texts are the product of the combination of other texts. Than the extract goes on with the description of a January Monday. Robyn's revival is so different from Vic's one. She has slept properly, as usual. She has to go teaching, she loves it, but she feels a bit anxious. That does not disturb her confidence and she wakes up doing some yoga exercises to calm herself.
