The extract is taken from David Lodge's postmodern novel "Nice work". In this extract is introduced a new character, that is a university teacher specializing in the industrial revolution's novel who calls Robyn Penrose. The extract is organized into three parts:
- The first part is an introductive part, in which the novelist declares his intention of introducing a new character that is completely different from the previous one.
- The second part of the extract provides the description of the character's way of thinking and his attitude about literature together with her worldview, she believes that the rise of classic novel has collaborated with the spirit of capitalism, some examples of the connection between the two are provided to support her thesis. Further more the novelist quotes the names of the novel's landmarks who have influenced Robyn Penrose's way of thinking.
- In the last part the novelist tells about Robyn's awakening during a January Monday. She is a little anxious because of the start of a new term at university. In the end the novelist quotes the name Charlie but he tells the reader that he will describe this character better going on with facts. The intelligent reader expects Charlie to be a Robyn Penrose's close friend because of the setting he is described in.
