 The Druids

The text at page 5 is the extract of the Commentarii de Bello Gallico, it is written by Julius Caesar. The extract concerning Druids underlines some their attitudes: for example they did not go to war and did not pay tribute as the rest of the people, besides they had an exemption of military service and from all this type of matters.  Druids dedicated their time to literature. They preferred learn by heart verses rather than writing. In private and public transaction there are used to use Greek character. From Caesar’s point of view that practice seemed to him to have adopted for two reasons: one because they did not desire that their doctrines to be divulged among the mass of the people and moreover because they did not want that those who learn relaxed their diligence on writing. Furthermore, Druids believe in reincarnation after death and consequently they disregarded the fear of the death. Thus, they respected stars and their motion, the extent of the world and power of immortal gods.
