Post-Colonial Issues in Exit West

  • Identity: In Exit West there is an opposition between the characterization of Saeed and Nadia. The first is bond with traditions, whereas, Nadia is “independent” and she isn’t bond with her traditions. Therefore, Hamids’ purpose is to abolish stereotypes.
  • Culture And Tradition: Saeed tries to find and recuperate his identity through prayer and the relationship with the Niderian group in London.
  • Belief And Religion: Saeed is tied with his tradition and religion, that is a way of connection with his parents.
  • Language: Mohsin Hamid, uses a very different English in comparison of the English spoken in Great Britain. Indeed he writes long sentences.
  • Location Or Sense Of Displacement: The novel is set firstly in an eastern country, secondly in Mykonos, thirdly in London and finally in Marin.
