Up to  5LSC A - Reading S. Rooney's Normal PeopleUp to task document list

In the following paragraphs I am going to provide some connections between the picture above and subjects or topic I know. The object of the present argumentative text is to demonstrate that it is possible to establish connections across different ideas and topics starting from a simple picture.

Firstly, looking at the picture, it can be seen that it represents a couple, kissing in Times Square in New York, and it dates back to the II World War. As the male character is kissing the girl in a passionate way, the picture suggests a strong relationship between them. Taking into consideration that the picture is dating to the II World War, it is also interesting to notice that this might be taken at the end of the II World War due to the hat that the male character is wearing.

The first thing that comes to light looking at the picture is the relationship between the two young people. This reminds me of the novel I have recently read: Normal People by Sally Rooney, where the two main characters, Marianne and Connell, are together and have a strong bond.

Normal People is a post-modern novel written by a young Irish novelist, Sally Rooney, that made her famous in all the world. The novel is about two young adolescents that are attending their last year of college in a small city in Ireland. The keystone of all the novel turns around their secret relationship. This happens because Connell, the male character, is worried of people’s judgement.

At the same time, there is an important contrast between the picture and the way I see the relationship between Marianne and Connell. In fact, the young couples in Normal People tends to keep their relationship secret while the two lovers in the picture are openly show their passionate feelings.

An additional element to consider looking at the picture is the skin’s colour of the male character. It suggests a reflection on gender violence but also about the differences between people coming from different places in the world.

Last but not least, it is relevant to consider the way the picture is shoot. The two young are close up therefore the observer may think that the object of the picture is to highlight the passionate love story and do not give importance to the surrounding context. This may make the observer reflect on the common saying  “amor vincit omnia”.

To conclude, establishing connections between different subjects is possible but it requires a deep knowledge as well as perceptiveness.
