FUNCTION OF THE CHAPTERS

CHAPTER  ONE:

• Main functions of the chapter:

o   To introduce the protagonist

o   To set the narrative structure

o   To offer the reader  the key  to read and understand the novel

o   To make reflections about stereotypes and different cultures

• Single out the novel structural elements the novelist mainly relies on in chapter one:

The most important structural elements in this chapter are the characters and the use of the dramatic monologue. The novelist introduces the protagonist Changez and makes him speaks whit a silent interlocutor (the American part who strangely  is the less important part).

CHAPTER  TWO:

• Main functions of the chapter:

o   To introduce Erica

o   To show the differences between Islamic and American costumes

o   To make a comparison between Changez and Erica, therefore between their different cultures

o   To  compare the different way to present himself between a male and a female

o   To put in evidence the differences between social classes

o   To underline that the Pakistani protagonist is attracted by the same things of the American journalist

o   To show the different costumes in Lahore between old and new generation

The novelist mainly relies on the characters: he presents the second protagonist of the novel.

The setting is important to present Erica and to introduce other themes (the different social classes Changez meets in Greece).

The plot puts in evidence the other messages.

CHAPTER  THREE:

o   To put in evidence the American culture and technology

o   To show economic power and meritocracy

o   To show the  American mentality (they are proud of their work)

o   To make a comparison between America and Pakistan: open mind versus a strict mentality

o   To underline that Pakistani are strictly connected with their history and traditions

The novelist gives the  most important messages when he stoppes the narration to return to the present.
