Analysis of Hamlet’s soliloquy:
In the soliloquy Hamlet is speaking to himself and he reflects on the meaning of existence. The intelligent reader should consider that Hamlet is angry because he is almost sure that his uncle murdered his father. As a young man, he would like to take revenge against him, so he would like kill his uncle. The soliloquy opens with the famous exclamation “to be or not to be”. The verb “to be” has multiple meanings such as “to exist” or “to live”. Besides, it implies you know why you are right here. Hamlet tries to consider what is the best action to take between two opposite possibilities. There are two different possibilities he could take:
suffer in his mind and bear his problems;
fight against problems
He uses a very concrete language like “slings, arrows…” almost to convey the pain of slings and arrows. Shakespeare conveys the state of a very dubitative mind.
