The extract is, as explicitly stated, the introduction to the content of the entire work, an unusual introduction, both in content, style and tone adopted. Here the author tries to hit the reader's interest, using the metaphor of the kitchen. Therefore the writer compares himself to a property owner of a tavern, which has the task of meeting with his own kitchen, which stands for his literary products, the expectations of the commensals, so the reader. The metaphor protracts throughout the whole introductory text, mentioning the matter the work will deal with, namely is human nature. It also focuses on which areas of human nature the writer will treat, especially in reference to the social realities, arguing with elements drawn from the culinary field. The text ends with the exhortation to the reader to go on reading and find out from time to time each of the dishes that make up the "bill of fare to the feast,", that is, of course, the novel.
