The present extract consists of the beginning of Virginia Woolf's novel "Mrs.Dalloway". In the novel, published in 1925, the poetess exposes the new narrative techniques. Right from the start the intelligent reader identifies Virginia Woolf's aim to give voice to the complex inner world of the novel characters. In order to reach this aim, the poetess uses a particular narrative technique called "interior monologue". Virginia Woolf used the "interior monologue" because she understood that it was impossible to reproduce the complexity of the human mind using traditional techniques. Right from the beginning the reader can capture Mrs Clarissa Dalloway's feelings and thoughts("and then, thought Clarissa Dalloway, what a morning"). Clarissa focuses her attention on the open early morning air of Bourton: "how fresh, how calm the air was in the early morning". The use of metaphors contributes to highlight and reinforce Mrs. Dalloway's feelings( "like the flap of a wave; the kiss of a wave") .
