Elizabeth I had a strong personality, she had received an excellent education and could speak French, Italian and Latin which was the language of the science.
Elisabeth I was Anna Boleyn’s daughter, She born thanks to an Anglican marriage and so her faith was protestant. In 1558, When she claimed the throne, England was divided because of religious problems. Indeed England was a protestant power, but during the previous reign , Mary I tried to restore the England to papal obedience.
Elizabeth decided to resolve religious problems to be tolerant with Catholic and Anglicans. She established religious freedom of worship.
Elizabeth was unmarried and used this as a political weapon, encouraging the hopes of European princes with whom it was important to keep on good terms. Her foreign policy allowed to have good terms with the most important power of Europe.
As she hadn’t any son or daughter, she was called “Virgin Queen.
Nevertheless the tolerance of Elizabeth, The Spanish viewed England as a Protestant heretic power in Europe. So in 1588 King Ferdinand of Spain tried to invade England with a great armada composed by an incredible number of Ships. Elizabeth defeated the enemy during an epic sea battle near the English cost. England won thanks to the wind and the use of flammable materials which burn the Spanish ships. The event increased the popularity of Elizabeth and the prestige of England.
Another strength of her policy was the image with whom she presented herself. She wire magnificent clothes adorned with rich jewels to impress her subjects, she had numerous portraits painted and copies widely distributed. She inspired literature, music, drama and poetry, indeed she was a Maecenas.
She reinforced trading position of England thanks to explorations, imports, exports and encouraging some captain to implement pirate actions against the enemies of the crown. Indeed they capture ships carrying precious metals, tobacco and slaves from America and Africa.
