The sonnet form was born in Italy thanks to Mr. Petrarch. The petrarchan sonnet consists of an octave and a sestet. The octave consists of two quatrains.

The rhyme scheme of the Italian sonnet is: ABAB ABAB C and so on.

What matter in terms of sound is that sound plays a very important function: it contributes to add compactness to the poem.

Sonnets better of other forms of poetry use a very syntactical form and condensed. The sonnet is a complex form of poetry. The octave presents the speaking voice’s problem. The sestet express a possible solution

The English poet who wants to keep the structure of the petrarchan sonnet has also to be faithful, adhere to the function of the Italian model.
