CHAPTER 1

Right from this chapter, the intelligent reader can notice that work is a monologue, though it is presented as dialogue, with a fictional interlocutor, who’s described as an American tourist in Pakistan. The narrator is a Pakistani man who tells this man about his American experience. He studied at Princeton University and he was one of the best students, this is the reason why he obtained a full scholarship and in the end why he was waiting to graduate “summa cum laude”, he even succeeded to get a job at Underwood Samsong, which was a very well- paid job.

CHAPTER 2

This chapter is about the meeting between Changez and Erica. In which the protagonist immediately fells in love with her; she tells him about her previous boyfriend who’s dead. Their friendship gives birth to a cultural comparison.

CHAPTER 3

The main thing of the 3rd chapter can surely be summarized as the chapter in which Changez describes is life at Underwood Samsong . All that brings to a cultural discussion. Changez realized that American cultural is very different from Pakistani one

CHAPTER 4

In this chapter, Changez meets Erica in New York. It is highly underlined the power of the stereotypes. In this chapter is very marked the economical difference between America and Pakistan.

CHAPTER 5

In this chapter while Changez is abroad for job, he listen about the twin towers crash and after that, he feels himself much more Pakistani than American. From that, he started to change his mentality and begins to come back to his origins.

CHAPTER 6

For the first time Changez doesn’t feel at home in America. Indeed after the world trade center attempt people started to look at Changez as a terrorist and so Changez felts discriminated. In this chapter American shows itself as strongly linked to his traditions and to the past. Erica still suffers because her boyfriend death and refuses to meet Changez; this is a very important point of the book because it means that America turns is shoulders back to Changez.

CHAPTER 7

Changez is now definitely and totally disenchanted about the American dream and then he realize how America is characterized by discrimination prejudices and his meritocracy is no longer considered. There is still a comparison the two different cultures and the big theme of this chapter is the fundamentalism . At the end of the chapter Changez starts to change himself.

CHAPTER 8

In this chapter there is the comparison between America’s and Erica’s decline; Changez decided to come back to his origins and change his point of view. Changez is worried about America’s dangerous nostalgia and her determination to look back. Underwood Samson doesn’t feel sorrow and goes on.

 

 

CHAPTER 9

The comparison between America and Pakistan is present also in this chapter. Changez realized that in Pakistan there are many problems mainly on financial and economic levels. As a symbol of his new identity ( Pakistani) the protagonist make his beard grow. He adopted an objective point of view of life. He comes back to America and start to work again.

CHAPTER 10

Changez travels to Chile and there he meets Juan Batista the chief of the publishing company he is valuing. Juan Batista explains to Changez about Janissaries, exposes him to concepts about a quality and art. Changez is worried about Pakistan situation.

CHAPTER 11

He discovers that Erica has probably committed suicide. He thinks about America’s foreign policy, he is critical of U.S. activities and attitudes. He is trouble about the conflict between his emotions. Changez loose his job.

CHAPTER 12

Changez leaves America and comes back to Pakistan and work as a University lecture. He is strongly oppose to American actions and he is interest in Pakistan future. He becomes an activist and he receives also official warnings from authorities; The story ends with Changez and the American man speaking together and with American man searching for something metal inside his jacket pocket. In the last lines Changez makes a final reflection: as Americans must not consider all the Pakistanis as potential terrorist, Pakistani must not consider all Americans as under covered assassins
